Toyota is preparing to launch its next-generation electric SUV in China starting in the autumn of 2027, marking a significant strategic pivot away from its traditional Japan-first approach as competition intensifies in the world's largest auto market. The move signals that the Japanese automaker is now prioritizing global scalability over domestic market precedence.

According to reports, the company is also accelerating its autonomous driving ambitions, aiming to introduce its proprietary L2++ system into passenger vehicles by 2028. This advanced driver-assistance technology is designed to require minimal human intervention, with broader deployment anticipated by 2030 as part of Toyota's long-term roadmap.

Sales data from Japan's three major automakers in China for July 2026 revealed a collective year-on-year decline, underscoring mounting pressure in the region. In its latest financial results for the first quarter of fiscal 2027, Toyota reported operating revenue of 13.53 trillion yen (approximately 571.71 billion yuan at current exchange rates), a 10.38% increase year-over-year, while net profit attributable to parent shareholders surged 75.56% to 1.48 trillion yen (around 62.54 billion yuan).

This restructuring highlights Toyota's determination to adapt to shifting market dynamics by localizing production and development, particularly in the EV and software-defined vehicle segments, where Chinese competitors have gained substantial traction.
