The CNN Money Fear and Greed index showed a further decline in overall market sentiment, while the index remained in the “Neutral” zone on Monday.

U.S. stocks settled lower on Monday, with the Dow Jones index falling more than 350 points during the session. Renewed US-Iran strikes over the weekend sent crude sharply higher Monday, reviving inflation fears and pushing the 10-year Treasury yield to its highest since January 2025.

However, stocks recorded gains last month, with the Dow gaining more than 1% in August, notching its fifth straight monthly advance. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq also added 2.6% and 3.9%, respectively, last month.

On the economic data front, the Dallas Fed’s general business activity index for Texas manufacturing surged to 11.6 in August, recording the strongest reading since Jan. 2025, compared to 1.3 in July.

On the earnings front, Science Applications International Corporation (NASDAQ:SAIC) reported better-than-expected second-quarter financial results and raised its FY27 guidance.

Most sectors on the S&P 500 closed on a negative note, with communication services, utilities and industrials stocks recording the biggest losses on Monday. However, energy and information technology stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.

The Dow Jones closed lower by around 374 points to 53,185.90 on Monday. The S&P 500 fell 0.33% to 7,686.14, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.12% at 26,370.89 during Monday’s session.

Investors are awaiting earnings results from Medtronic PLC (NYSE:MDT), Dell Technologies Inc (NYSE:DELL) and Palo Alto Networks Inc (NASDAQ:PANW) today.

At a current reading of 49.6, the index remained in the “Neutral” zone on Monday, versus a prior reading of 52.3.

What is CNN Business Fear & Greed Index?

The Fear & Greed Index is a measure of the current market sentiment. It is based on the premise that higher fear exerts pressure on stock prices, while higher greed has the opposite effect. The index is calculated based on seven equal-weighted indicators. The index ranges from 0 to 100, where 0 represents maximum fear and 100 signals maximum greediness.
